Kaley Cuoco’s romance with Big Bang Theory co-star – tense TV romp to moving on with newcomer.
While the fictional character on The Big Bang Theory was a nerd who fell in love with the girl next door, Johnny Galecki and co-star Kaley Cuoco were actually in a real relationship.
A brief romantic relationship between Kaley Cuoco and one of her closest co-stars on The Big Bang Theory once began.
In the CBS sitcom, Kaley portrayed Penny, the girl next door, and Johnny Galecki played Leonard, the geek who develops feelings for her. However, the two performers were actually falling in love with one another behind the scenes.
When they initially got together in 2007 on the comedy show’s set, Kaley acknowledged she had a major crush on him right away, even though they were both in previous relationships at the time. “I had a very big crush on Johnny early on,” Kaley acknowledged in the book The Huge Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series.
“I wasn’t even trying to hide it.” He’s so swaggering. At the moment, I was seeing other people, but my eyes were only on Johnny. I immediately thought, “Uh-oh, this is going to be trouble,” after learning that he had feelings for me as well.
Things reached a breaking point when Penny, played by Kaley, dressed as a seductive cat for Halloween and they shared their first-ever kiss on TV. She clarified, saying, “I was feeling very good about myself because I knew I looked really cute in that outfit.” And since he had earlier remarked on how adorable I looked in that clothing, I knew he thought the same. But before to that kiss, I was undoubtedly anxious.
He had to hold me up, and we had to do this incredibly close thing, so I was like, ‘Get me out of here. “My cheeks were even red,” she continued.
Kaley Cuoco Secret Romance
When the couple began dating seriously in 2008, they intended to hide it from their fans. The Nerdvana Annihilation, the first episode of the first season, is where it all began, as Leonard imagines saving Penny down their building’s elevator shaft.
“I think we fell a little in love in that elevator shaft,” Kaley said. As Johnny blurted out, “Yeah, we felt something.” That, in my opinion, marked a significant turning point in our relationship.”
“At that point, she and I both sensed that there was a mutual feeling, and that attempting to ignore it would be more of a diversion from the work than acknowledging it and letting it go.” Kaley then broke up with her partner of the time.
But, as Kaley clarified, there was a solid reason why their relationship remained under wraps: “We wanted the fans to want Leonard and Penny together so badly that if they saw us together in real life, it could ruin the fantasy.”
Tragic Split
The couple secretly ended their relationship in 2009, citing their shared desire for “different things.” “We simply had very different interests in what I think we wanted from our experience of life,” Johnny clarified.
It wasn’t the sole explanation. Kaley acknowledged that they simply ran out of topics to talk about. After working all day, she continued, “Johnny and I also ran out of topics to talk about. We would return to one of our places together and say, ‘So how was your day? Did you think Simon was funny today? And since we lacked mystery, we would chuckle.
However, we spent a lot of time together. We were fortunate that there was no malice intended and that our relationship simply ended as we were growing apart, even though we truly loved one another.” However, before things returned to normal, there was “some hurt” for a while.
The couple didn’t acknowledge their relationship until 2010, when Kaley told CBS Watch! Magazine, “We kept denying it to everyone who kept asking. And I think to myself, “Why am I depriving this person I love?”
Instead of risking it becoming public knowledge, the two “couldn’t do anything” together, so they just became “dear friends.” “I think I might value my relationship with her more than any other previous relationship or relationship afterwards,” Johnny stated in an interview with Vanity Fair. I really value the bond we have so much. And I believe that contributes to our wonderful connection.

Sex Scene Tension
After they broke up, Kaley claims that the amount of sexual scenes between their characters only skyrocketed, accusing Chuck Lorre, the show’s creator, of included them to “mess” with the ex-couple. “When we broke up, obviously it was a little sensitive for a minute, but I remember those weeks that Chuck [Lorre] had written these episodes where all of a sudden our characters were like sleeping together every other second,” she said to the Armchair Expert podcast hosts.
Johnny and I have discussed it, and I believe that Chuck intentionally did that in order to get even with us. Because that was unexpected. Suddenly, these personalities were at odds with one another.
But creator Lorre refuted the allegations, saying, “No. Not at all. There’s no place for f***ing with anybody when putting on a good show. “Let’s mess with Kaley and Johnny” is not present. Making a fantastic show and making every minute of each episode matter were the main objectives. And that was the sole objective.
We don’t have the flexibility to screw with someone’s head over a TV show you’ve invested a lot of time and energy into. No. They seem to find it endearing that we believe we are intelligent enough to fool them.
Moving On
Johnny attended Kaley’s wedding to her now-ex-husband Ryan Sweeting after their breakup. After meeting the former tennis star on a blind date, she married him; however, following 21 months of blissful marriage, she filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.
After that, she began dating Netflix celebrity Tom Pelphrey. The two have “no hurry” to be married, although they welcomed daughter Matilda in March 2023. They also own Opal, a rescue dog.
In contrast, Johnny started dating Alaina Meyer in 2018, and the two became parents to a kid named Avery the following year. But by 2020, the couple was no longer together.
Johnny had already dated another cast member before he fell in love with Kaley. He fell in love with Sara Gilbert, who he would later co-star in The Big Bang Theory, while he was a teenager and staring in Roseanne. Sara realized during their relationship that she was a lesbian, but she and her ex-boyfriend are now close friends.
